Works/San Jose’s Benefit Auction Returns!

With more than 100 pieces of art donated by scores of the area’s artists, Works/San Jose’s exhibition of auction pieces will launch on Thursday, Nov. 20. and culminate with its long-awaited benefit auction on Saturday, Dec. 6.

This friday night, Works/San Jose has a great lineup of FREE entertainment and activities going on.

If you are planning on bringing in a piece of art to donate during South First Friday, please download, print, and fill out the participation form from our website before you come in.

Opening Reception: Urban Veritas features new work by youth artists who explore self expression, identity and sub-culture in the forms of photography, videos and digital work. San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art -560 South First Street

In the Main Gallery: Manuel Neri: The Figure in Relief. Internationally acclaimed sculptor’s 25-year retrospective of figurative relief sculptures in exclusive Bay Area presentation. As one of the premier figurative sculptors living today, this solo exhibition highlights relief sculptures and related drawings by this living master. In the Focus Gallery: Chris Dorosz: The Painted Room. Playing with the physicality of paint and the pixilation of digital imagery,  this life-size installation of a living room made of splotches of paint suspended on hanging monofilament is a visual treat.

San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles -520 South First Street

Are you getting enough fiber?  Get all the fiber you need at the first High Fiber Under Five benefit art sale. The entire Museum will be filled with the work of over 90 invited artists from around the world, including some of the biggest names in the fiber arts. This unique art sale is an opportunity to admire and acquire world class fiber art, including wearable art, handmade one-of-a-kind jewelry, wall pieces and sculpture, all priced at $500 or less.

Binta Ayofem: New Works Ayofemi is a visual artist working in large scale color photography, digital video projection, and sculptural installation. Winner of a National Advancement for the Arts Award and a Harvard Traveling Fellowship, she has exhibited in Boston and San Francisco. Her short film works have been recently exhibited in Prague. She received a MFA  in Art Practice at Stanford University’s Dept of Art and Art History, and has a BA in Comparative Literature and Art History from Smith College.

Artist’s Reception: Playful, energetic and rhythmic acrylic monotypes by printmaker Donna Ormé.
Also featuring: Artists from Opera San José will be singing your favorite arias beginning at 8:30pm.

Also featuring:  Vanishing Treasures of the World  by painter Robin Wagar. Paintings of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Petra in Jordan, the Golden Domes a Ruaaian Kremlin, the Alhambra in Granada Spain, and shrines in Iraq and Jerusalem are among the sites that Robin has painted in her long and dedicated career.  By painting these sites, Robin hopes to bring attention to them. And, by donating part of the proceeds from sales of her original paintings or her giclees to benefit the preservation of World Heritage sites, she hopes to help this effort.

Hello Silicon Valley Art Community,

Jane Przybysz, Director of San Jose’s Museum of Quilts and Textiles,
was in a head-on collision in Napa this week end. A driver took a sudden left turn in front of her car, tried to correct at the last minute, and ended up hitting Jane and her husband directly. Their car is totaled, Mark has broken foot and Jane is in the hospital with three chipped vertebrae.

Today, Wednesday, Jane is being fitted for a back brace. Tomorrow she will be released to come back to San Jose.

Many people have asked ARTSHIFT where they can send flowers. Jane and her staff are saying that Jane’s fundraising efforts are going to be greatly curtailed as a result of this setback, so they would love people to send donations to the Museum of Quilts and Textiles, instead of flowers. This is an excellent idea, because, let’s face it, our arts institutions are usually cash-strapped and balancing precariously. In these economic times, some cash contributions to the Museum’s fundraising would be most welcome and lift everyone’s spirits!

As you come by the Museum of Quilts and textiles this First Friday, please leave a substantial contribution. Neither flowers nor art are cheap!

At last: the Benefit Art Auction! You are the key to Works’ renewal!

Dear artist and friend of Works/San José:

For the first time in two years, Works, your community art and performance center, is asking for your art for the 2008 Benefit Auction! Works is right now working toward a stable home, rehiring its part time gallery coordinator, restarting music and performance nights, and accepting exhibition proposals for the new year in its current space as the guest of the property owners. This will be the most important auction ever for a south bay arts organization, and your commitment and most inspired artwork are needed now to move works into the future. Over the previous few auctions works has nearly doubled its revenue from this essential fundraising event. At this critical time, with your help, we can and must continue this trend.

PLEASE CONFIRM right away that you will contribute to this important event by sending an email to auction@workssanjose.org. Include the spelling of your name, email address, and phone number, so that we can include you in auction press releases and on our website as early as possible. Please find artist donation forms, instructions for sending a jpeg image of your work, and auction updates at: www.workssanjose.org

Please deliver art to 451 South First Street in downtown San José on one of these 3 days: Thursday, November 6, 3 to 7pm, Friday, November 7, noon to 4pm—or 8 to 10pm during South First Friday, or on Saturday, November 8, noon to 4pm. All work should be complete with frame, glass, etc. as appropriate, or otherwise ready to hang or display. You may retain a percentage of the sale of your work or donate the entire sale amount to works. As just one token of our appreciation, we offer you a free one year membership to Works/San José.

Reception and Auction: December 6 starting at 5pm with auction at 7pm

it’s hard to believe, but it was a year ago that we did the last SIDESCROLLER event, so we’re WAY overdue. Come join us Saturnday, November 8th, from 6:00pm to midnight-ish for a night of retro and not-retro games in the genre of the futuristic side scrolling shooter. $5 donation is requested so we can help pay the rent and electricity bill at Works/San Jose. Anything goes in this open themed exhibit juried by the attending reception audience. You remember last year, we are doing it up even BIGGER this year! So bring on the ART!
