Biophilia, a phenomenon brought into popular awareness by biologist E.O. Wilson, is the innately emotional affiliation of human beings to other living organisms. According to Wilson, we humans have an affinity for the natural world that has evolved over millennia and is part of our genetic makeup.

The artists in this exhibition acknowledge human tendencies towards biophilia with an amazing scope of diverse creations. They respond to and mimic the natural world with both realism and abstraction, invention and science. They look to landscape, creatures, biology, and the elements, often hybridizing new forms of beingness. They employ art media and concepts as a means of communion with a concept of nature that is slipping beyond their grasp. Their artworks demonstrate close connection, consideration, and looking at human interconnection with the natural world.

This exhibition investigates the relationship between Nevada desert development and the Silicon Valley economy through views of the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRIC) in rural Storey County, Nevada, just over California’s eastern border. Despite its storied history, the more recent inclusion in the Silicon Valley megaregion allows for the integration of high-tech industrialization. As we explore the expansive 107,000 acres of arid Great Basin, touted as the world’s largest industrial park, we encounter concerns around governance and sustainable growth. TRIC prioritizes capitalist ideals of production over environmental and public concerns. The result is imposing and monumental architecture often catering to those with power and privilege.

“All for Ray, Ray for All” community exhibition on view this summer

artist Ray Ashley with serigraph titled “No Message”

Ray was for all of us in local visual arts and that’s what this exhibition is about. As Works/San José settles into its new home with the grand opening of Open San José, we asked our community of artists to create a new work in collaboration with the late San José artist, collector, and patron, Ray Ashley. This exhibition includes a wide range of artists and artistic viewpoints working with and inspired by Ray’s art and extraordinary attitude towards life.

opening reception with grand opening of Open San José:
Saturday, June 10, 12pm-4pm
exhibition: June 10 to June 25 and returns July 21 to August 5

hours: Fridays 12-6pm, Saturdays and Sundays 12-4pm

Ray Ashley was a joy to know and be around. He was an artist, incredible collector of local art, and a supporter of Works since its inception in 1977. He was also a prolific artist who studied at San José State. Ray suffered severe injuries from a grenade explosion in the war in Việt Nam. After years of surgeries and rehabilitation he made hundreds of silk screen and monotype prints before eventually losing the physical ability to create more. Even then, Ray stayed focused on supporting other artists and arts organizations—especially Works.

Ray passed away in 2016 after a battle with cancer, and had willed a portion of his estate to Works. As Works’ largest individual donor, starting a significant fund for the future of Works, Ray is a permanent sponsor of all our exhibitions. Most of his collection of more than 1,000 works by hundreds of regional artists is now in the collection of the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara.

Coinciding with the Triton’s showing of Ray’s collection in 2017, Works mounted an exhibition of Ray’s prints and experiments titled “One of a Kind: mono prints and more by Ray Ashley.” Works was given hundreds of Ray’s prints for the exhibit with the instruction that we manage and find homes for them, and not return any. Many were sold at that exhibit and since, and many given to fans. This exhibit seeks to bring new life to some of the remaining prints, and will include several originals we have set aside and preserved.

More about Ray: Raymond E. Ashley, born October 15, 1942 in San Francisco, died November 28, 2016 in San José. Ray’s father’s military career took his family half way around the world before they settled in California. His mother, a nurse, also painted.

Ray was an activist opposed to the war in Việt Nam, and he moved to Canada with Irene Clark, whom he married in 1967. He applied for status there but was refused by Canadian authorities. So when he got his draft papers from the United States, he went into the army. Ray was hit by a grenade in 1968, within a year of being drafted. He was so close to the explosion that the metal fragments were white-hot when they pierced his body, thus cauterizing his massive wounds and saving him from bleeding to death.

Ray related, with some humor, that his various medical evaluations, when added up, pronounced him 200% disabled. With years of work in therapy, he regained his ability to talk and walk, although he had trouble with both for the rest of his life. Even with damage to his brain, doctors reported that he had an IQ of 168. He never complained. A sign in his house in west San José proclaimed a “no whining zone,” and he never had a bad word to say about anyone.

Painting in occupational therapy got Ray seriously interested in art, and he enrolled at San José State University, where he studied painting and printmaking. Ray became a beloved member of the South Bay art community. He lived simply and used his military disability payments to buy art. He notoriously outbid others at benefit auctions over the years and amassed an astounding collection local and regional art.

Ray was an early member of the Board of Directors of Works and served for many years on the organization’s Advisory Board.

Thanks to Anna Koster and Joe Miller for notes on Ray Ashley.

Death, Destruction, and Whimsy at Works!

Death, Destruction, and Whimsy
Artists: Chris Bunz, Cynthia Yadira Gonzalez, Hana Lock, and Lydia Rae Black, guest curator.

exhibition: April 8 through May 6, 2023
hours: Fridays 12-6pm, Saturdays and Sundays 12-4pm
Closing party: Saturday, May 6, 4-6pm with artist talks and refreshments

Beauty and trauma collide in this meditation on the failures of society to understand the artist as a complete person. Four artists from extremely different backgrounds have arrived at the same conclusion—the role of the artist is filtering noise, and art is a reaction and symptom of current conditions. Avoiding the onerous expectation of providing entertainment, artists rail against the soulless manufacturing of hopeful work in a social climate that can only be described as hostile to emotional health. The exhibition will present the paradox of creating for nobody but yourself, but wanting to set it in front of an audience anyway.

Although acknowledging the absurdity of art making and being completely aware of the futility of it all, the exhibition continues through May 6.

Resilience(d) was originally scheduled for March of 2020 at the previous home of Works and part of Works’ guest curator program. The exhibit had a scheduled opening the week Covid-19 hit the United States. The exhibition was an endeavor born from the collective experiences and ideas of original guest curators Rosanna Alvarez and Sara Cole, based on earlier conversations between Sara and Joe Miller. After long pauses over the next two years due to the pandemic, the concept expanded and was reconfigured into the exhibition as it stands now.

Original artworks by the late great Ray Ashley and others will be available for any donation. Come and talk with us about how you can participate in the new Works/San José!

• promotion of that page in email and social media
• up to 3 images per member
• up to 3 links per member to your sites—web, social media, sales

Inbetween exhibition online!

Inbetween: sjsu animation/illustration bfa 2020

Inbetween (n/adj): intermediate; an animation process of generating intermediate frames between two images, to give the appearance that the first image evolves smoothly into the second image.

Inbetween was planned as a massive exhibition at Works of experimental animation, character design, and fantastical imagery from May into June. Now view online the work of dozens of graduates in animation, 3D modeling, story, visual development, and group thesis projects.

Works receives notice to move out of 365 South Market by June 2021

A letter from Joe Miller, president,
and the Board of Directors of Works/San José

Dear members and friends of Works,

We’ve received notice from The Office of Councilmember Raul Peralez that Works must vacate our 365 South Market Street home by June of 2021. At that time the gallery is to be demolished and turned into a “visitor center” and executive office space for Team San José (TSJ). As many of you know, this has been part of an evolving effort by Works’ landlord TSJ to move us out of our home. Their first proposal, less than 2 years ago, was that Works would become cubicle space for potential new TSJ employees. Last year, our liaison with TSJ informed us that the space would be converted to executive offices. In December of 2019, TSJ’s CEO advised us that Works should be looking to relocate very soon. In the past few months TSJ Board members and employees again informed us of the plan for executive offices, and also of a plan for a visitor center. The plan to locate a visitor center there seems counter to the view of their CEO, who had said that our area has little foot traffic and low visibility.

Regardless of those contradictions, the City is now very excited about the visitor center idea, since eliminating Works for office space alone would deactivate the Market Street side of the convention center, where Works is the only storefront activity. In fact, a District 3 representative has requested that Works keep the site activated up until the conversion to the visitor center.

The day after the notice, I reached out to our District 3 contacts, asking if there could be any assistance in moving and building out a new space, since both TSJ and the City had encouraged and approved our recent improvements to the space. Improvements including flooring, electrical, lighting, and streetscaping were done after assurances of continued leases, and were paid for exclusively from donations to Works. After a few weeks we have yet to receive a response or acknowledgement. We understand that the City has a lot on its plate, but Works did not pick the timing of this decision. This huge financial and logistical challenge for Works coincides with immense reductions in City arts funding, due to the collapse of hotel tax revenue. Although Works is highly rated by reviewers for City Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) grants, arts grantees will suffer severe cuts in this and next year, according to the OCA.

People throughout our arts community often say that Works is a survivor, and it has been. However, with this new move, Works will have had to find, fund, and build out a completely new site on the of average of every 6 years of its 43-year history. No other local arts organization has survived that frequency and number of upheavals. We are optimistic that we will be able to survive this move, but we’ll need a lot of help—the expense and work will be formidable.

Nine years ago, I and a great group of Board members and volunteers moved Works out of a financially disastrous location set up by the City’s then Redevelopment Agency. We had the help of Sam Liccardo and his then District 3 office in escaping that situation and securing our current home. Since moving to 365 South Market, where we took over a nearly empty space used for storage, we’ve been able to build great relationships and a good reserve. However, we still need the City to respond and not literally pull the rug (which we had installed just before all of this) out from under us.

Please send a polite note to the following individuals, asking that if they must evict Works and demolish the investments we’ve made, to please also provide support for the move to, and buildout of, a new Works/San José community art space. Please write to:

Councilmember Raul Peralez: raul.peralez@sanjoseca.gov

Mayor Sam Liccardo: mayoremail@sanjoseca.gov

Team San José does not have a representative who can reply at this time. We have spoken with the COO who confirmed a one year lease extension to June 2021.

Works will return.

Works/San José is closed at this time due to the COVID 19 outbreak. We will assess when we can open following City and County guidelines.

Patterns of Disintegration explores the natural decay and material break-down that intersects with our daily life. The show is co-curated by Monica Valdez and Emily Van Engel and includes six emerging artists living in San José and the surrounding area.

“The artists embrace different ways in which things change and fall apart,” notes Valdez. “Through sculpture, photography or painting, the artists reiterate broken-down components to produce artwork that then becomes a vehicle to discuss those changes.”

“The notion of disintegration is part of a healthy life cycle, but is often overlooked,” said Van Engel. “Regeneration or decay can bring about uncomfortable feelings, such as laziness, uncleanliness or shame, but when we look at the multitude of ways that break-down occurs in our daily life, it can inform how we operate in the world.”

In animation, the word keyframe refers to the defining drawing of a sequence. A sequence of keyframes defines the movement and story the viewer will see, and the position of the keyframes on the film, video, or animation defines the timing of the movement. While the term originates from the days of traditionally drawn animation, “keyframe” is a universal term used in stop motion, 2D animation, visual effects, and 3D animation. Sixty-three animators, modelers, storyboard artists, and visual development artists show defining moments from their student careers that will help guide their first steps into the professional entertainment industry, making these, essentially, their own keyframes.

Shifting Tides on view through May 5

Shifting Tides
convergence in cloth

Fiber Art from the Seven Pacific Regions of Studio Art Quilt Associates. Shifting Tides is presented as a world premier traveling exhibition in collaboration with Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA).

opening reception: Saturday, April 20, 1pm–3pm
presented to coincide with San José Museum of Quilts & Textiles opening at 3pm

closing party and South First Friday art walk: Friday, May 3, 7pm–11pm

special hours for this exhibition:
Wednesday–Friday noon–6pm, Saturday–Sunday noon–4pm

Shifting Tides: convergence in cloth explores the current state of the Pacific Ocean through the eyes of those living in an arc along the western shores of North America to the archipelago of Hawai’i.

The Pacific Ocean is a source of life and livelihood. Yet the threats are growing, challenging perceptions of limitless bounty. Overfishing and global warming endanger not just oceanic life, but the human communities that depend on it. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is larger than Texas. The ocean knows no jurisdictional boundary: solutions demand a convergent effort of communities and governments.

Forty-six SAQA artists from California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawai’i and British Columbia use fabric to express their anguish and hope for the Pacific region. Exhibition Juror, Ann Johnston, offers a representative range of mainland and island habitats and issues, as well as an array of design approaches and construction techniques. Some works focus solely on one area of wildlife or human activity, while others integrate issues. Some artists reached for scientific research, while others drew on a personal memory of place or crisis. All deepen our understanding of fabric as an art form.

Evocation Made Real on view through April 7

An immersive installation by Bill Gould with paintings by Gloria Huet and Judy Rookstool reveal conscious and unconscious collections of memories and reminiscences from parts of their lives to demonstrate the lasting power of stored images and experiences. Each artist evokes elements of reminiscence to focus on the importance of the past to their everyday actions and interactions. The combination of the artists’ recollections is designed to create responses to those memories and to generate recollections of the viewer.

Opening the year with unifying positivity (we can and do hope), Works presents a community exhibition based on, and in response to, the flag of Unity In Diversity designed in San José by Javier Yep, a first-generation immigrant. Although he designed this conceptual symbol, Yep believes the ultimate flag of unity in diversity should be the one of the United States, which has welcomed him here. Designer Yep’s highly reductive symbolism is juxtaposed to the highly varied and textured work of our full community of artists and designers, who responded with portraiture, self-portraiture, biographical, and auto-biographical work in a multitude of physical and digital media.

Unity In Diversity is supported by an X-Factor grant from SV Creates, and by a mini grant from Knight Foundation’s “Speak Up San José” initiative.

One of Works’ most generous supporters, Ray passed away late in 2016. Works will provide the opportunity to collect Ray’s work just as he collected the work of so many regional artists. Tables of silk screen and mono prints by Ray are available for visitors to select prints for any donation. The exhibit includes intaglio prints and watercolor paintings in an exhibit that hints at Ray’s intense experimentation and form iterations.

The phrase “alternative facts” was originally used by Kellyanne Conway, United States Counselor to the President, during a Meet the Press interview on January 22 of this year. She used the phrase to defended White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s false statement dramatically inflating the number of people in attendance at Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 45th President of the United States.

Featuring work by Sita Bhaumik, Felix d’Eon, Karla Diaz, Monique Islam, Prole Arts Collective (Nosfe and Rarotonga), Isaías D. Rodríguez, and Arnoldo Vargas, this exhibition re-examines social based-phantom culture by sampling and appropriating sources that are linked to both high and low culture through use of materials that convey social-economic and political class, race, gender, and sexuality. Chafismo highlights work that moves towards the current dialogue surrounding the complexity within ChicanX practices. This often means artists giving a critical voice to prevailing theoretical paradigms that frame arte y cultura as long relegated issues that should be expanding our understanding of positionality, value, and worth. By questioning established standard tenets as idle, a new approach and visual language can emerge to probe the conventionality of what is considered broken, irreverent, or complacent.

Exhibition: February 4 through March 12, 2017

Works opens its 40th anniversary year with an exhibition curated by Angelica Muro and Hector Dionisio Mendoza. Chafismo re-examines social based-phantom culture by sampling and appropriating sources that are linked to both high and low culture through use of materials that convey social-economic and political class, race, gender, and sexuality. This often means giving a new function to something that would conventionally be considered broken, irreverent, or complacent.

Silver Ochre Live, November 19!

AC Villa and Thollem transform the mundane into the exotic in a mesmerizing sonic and visual environment.

“intense and virtuosic…” -TimeOut NY

Silver Ochre Live takes the audience into sonic and visual environments, passing between elegant lines and questionable borders, through diffused stories and striking beauty. This visual/sonic combination transforms the mundane into the exotic and reveals the familiar in the strange. Thollem and ACVilla’s collaboration reflect their decade of perpetual touring. ACVilla’s experimental videography and Thollem’s spontaneous compositions reveal the curiosity and ease with which they surf the extremes that travel inevitably presents.

Eventbrite - Silver Ochre Live: Thollem Electric/ACVilla

ACVilla has been nomadic since 2008 working as an artist’s facilitator, grant writer and photo-videographer. Her interest in, and study of, lines is evident in the ways she accentuates them, erases them and crosses them in every aspect of her life. A summer nomad since her second decade, she had become a perpetual peripatetic traveler by her fourth. After living in a log cabin in the California coastal redwood forest and helping rebuild a 100-year old adobe abode in the high desert of Northern New Mexico, she found herself receiving mail in Mexico City, Prague and Thessaloniki, among other places. She has seeded ideas and plants, penned thoughts, shaped clay and wire, and witnessed the sunsets over both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, all the while seeing and listening to Life in new and unique ways.

Thollem is a peripatetic pianist/keyboardist, composer, improviser, singer-songwriter, author and educator. His compositions and performances range from the sub-genres of post-classical, free jazz, noise, punk rock and ecclecticism. He has been touring perpetually throughout North America and Europe since 2006, performing solo works as well as collaborating with an array of musicians, dancers and filmmakers including ACVilla, Martha Colburn and Manucinema (Tuia Cherici). The music for Silver Ochre is inspired and influenced by the incredible array of music heard in this multi-cultural country including but not limited to: Corridos, Gamelan, Taiko, Free Jazz, Noise, Post-Classical, Arabic, Blues, Circus music and more, all filtered through the lens of an experimental piano player.

“ACVilla’s vibrant footage is expertly matched to Thollem’s strangely nuanced sonic output.” – Live Eye TV

“An intense and virtuosic keyboardist” (TimeOut NY) with “fluid keys pulverization” (Spin Magazine), Thollem possesses “an attractively extreme viewpoint” (LA Times).

Artists Elvira M. Dayel, Sharon Kyle Kuhn, and Victoria Welling construct an invented, fragmented, and reassembled environment. The artists explore the balance and unavoidable conflicts between beauty and repulsion, chaos and order, and the never ending battle to resolve shifting urban realities.

Elvira Dayel explores personal interpretations of reality. New constructs become a vital part of nature, offering a resolution to our struggle to obtain balance in our built environment. Abstracted and delineated shapes depict new landscapes we might all fit into.

Sharon Kyle Kuhn turns the chaos of fragmented pieces of construction debris into orderly compositions that tightly hold together. She explores the small details of urban life that most people would describe as ‘ugly’ or often overlook as irregular pieces of industrial materials.

Victoria Welling explores relationships with nature while stimulating sensory responses with materials, texture, and composition. The result is a body of work that leads the viewer down a path toward sensory overload with a delicate yet bold dialogue between beauty and repulsion.

Caprichos Anatomicos on view through September 20

Caprichos Anatomicos is about artists depicting obsession through abstraction: mania, fascination, fixation, passion, and preoccupation. Through abstraction, the artist is reducing focus—focusing on one obsession—a word, an image, a gesture. Abstraction becomes the complexity: erasing what we don’t need, we will find what we want. Curated by Angelica Muro and Juan Luna-Avin.

Natural Extraction opens First Friday, May 1

Natural Extraction

a landscape of emerging artists

opening reception: Friday, May 1, 7 to 10pm

22 local artists draw inspiration from nature, distilling forms from the landscape to reorient themselves within the natural world. Although our species undeniably forms a part of a larger ecosystem, our relationship to this ecosystem grows ever more convoluted, as our constructed environments become considered an extension of nature itself.

Beginning in 2012, more than half the world’s population resided in cities. The romantic notion of unspoiled wilderness as a place of refuge and rejuvenation persists to this day. Yet our interpretations of landscape are inherently informed by our interpretations of urbanity; the boundaries between nature and man-made are confounded.

Don’t Draw That: répondez s’il vous plaît

(Re)opening Reception: First Friday, April 3, 7pm-11pm

Join the event on Facebook!

Exhibition continues with new digital submissions from around the world: Qatar to Chicago, Hyderabad to Portland.

Local to international work in response to the murder of artists by terrorists in Paris, global attacks on freedom of expression, and the environment that fosters or fights aspects of these issues. The attacks and ensuing calls from many in reaction, including world leaders, for artists not to create provocative work on religion or other subjects that might offend—have spurred a wide range of responses from creative individuals and communities.

Works invited artists, cartoonists, designers, poets, etc., to submit work that responds to any aspect or point of view on these subjects: Do images incite hate and violence? Can images counter hate and violence? What should be the response of creative people to attacks on individuals or on freedom of expression itself? Are there other questions that should be posed?

Exhibition runs March 5 to April 11.

Digital image submissions will be accepted throughout the exhibit for projection:

“Objectified” Our role as humans living in an urban lifestyle seems to be following the trends of our peers, our community, and the media we are fed. Is this our job? We do have choices, right? Do the living spaces that surround us own us or do we own them? Our Objectified series poses these questions and allows viewers to come up with answers by creating a conversation within the self. What is all this stuff in my living space and why do I choose these material items? There seems to be a sort of cohesive relationship built between animate and inanimate objects in the home. We want to entice you to explore four powerful examples of common living spaces that will come alive through human models fashioned with body paint.

Come see the RV—first time exhibited in the Bay Area. And a brand new room created just for this special exhibitions closing reception. Enjoy a special tasting of themed foods inspired by the installations (suggested donation of $8 for the tasting, entry is free)

Free and open to the public.

Named for the spectacularly outrageous performer, Beyond Gaga is a juried exhibition of fun, sexy, provocative, and deliberately unsettling sculpture and installation art. The call to artists, from curator Lynne Todaro, was to be shocking, awesome, sublime, and outrageous—to push their imaginations to the edge and beyond. The results include bronze bacon, cloth crab claws, and interactive masculine fantasies, among many other sculptural adventures.

Presented in collaboration with The Pacific Rim Sculptors Group. Juried by DeWitt Cheng and Lauren Baines.

“Graphic design is an experience that seeks to influence audiences through visual communication. It accomplishes this by utilizing the creative process to fuse form and content. We will create an exhibition that engages audiences by challenging their preconceptions of graphic design, leaving them with a broader knowledge of its impact.”

MAKE SHIFT is about discovery through process, and growth through change. As designers, we are constantly searching for innovative ways to tackle on challenges we encounter, striving to create something better than the preexisting. It is not until we step out of our comfort zone, learn from the mistakes we make along the way, and explore options do we actually begin to shift our thinking.

Femme Fatale is a seductive and haunting exhibition exploring the complexities of femininity. Featuring the work of Bay Area artists Jody Alexander, Connie Begg, Victoria May, Stephanie Metz, and Sylvia Min, Femme Fatale is both a subtle homage and commentary of domesticity, social constructs, and the feminine experience.

Jody Alexander references domesticity and “values” through an installation of found objects carefully wrapped in fabric.  Fascinated by history and feminine iconography, Connie Begg illuminates the tension of capturing a frightening yet beautiful object through historical photographic processes. Victoria May’s organza and steel based forms reflect her interest in domesticity, tension, and dichotomy, and allude to the fundamental struggles inherent in the human condition. Utilizing wool fibers and textiles, Stephanie Metz attempts to “distill the essence of a creature” and acknowledges our mammalian roots in her mysterious sculptures. Emphasizing light and shadow, Sylvia Min examines the iconic image of the bride through her paintings.

The artwork, while diverse in form, resonates with overlapping proclivities towards detail, concept, and tone. Monochromatic sculptures, installations, paintings, and photographs seduce and disturb through layers of inherent tensions, enigmatic contrasts, and meticulous handwork.

Femme Fatale is curated by Sylvia Min.

"3 Woman, 1 Woman Show (with three women)" with The Cardboard Box Theatre Project

Works presents The Cardboard Box Theatre Project in an evening of Femor!

Friday and Saturday, January 13 and 14, 2012

shows at 8pm (doors open 7:30pm)

The Cardboard Box Theatre Project will present all-new, original comedic evenings on January 13 and 14, 2012 at Works/San Jose. Doors open half an hour before showtime (Show 8PM Friday; 8PM Saturday). (Concessions available) Tickets: Pay what you can.

The Cardboard Box Theatre Project’s 3 Woman, 1 Woman Show (with three women) offers an evening of theatre celebrating female humor. Comprised of multiple scenes and sketches written by the company, 3 Woman features three Cardboard Box favorites: Hayley Lovgren, Maren Lovgren and Kristin Schmitz. These three amazingly talented and extremely funny women guide the audience through a whirlwind tour of “womanhood” that explores everything from budding sexuality to gender roles to downright competition. Their one-woman show (with three women) will leave you laughing as you are introduced to the many facets of Femor (female humor). Much more than a night of stand-up, 3 Woman offers audiences a chance to delight in a fast paced theatre piece that will introduce you to new Cardboard Box characters including venerable actress Kitty Parade, Sister Regina who struggles to teach young women about their…well, you know…, and a new muse shepherding the creative output of today’s social media.

The evening will begin with several opening acts of music, dance, and theatre presented by other Cardboard Box Theatre Project actors.

Join us as we explore & celebrate Femor!

iraqimemorial.org is a participation-based conceptual project launched in 2007 as an internet platform for artists, designers, and architects to propose concepts for memorials to the unrecognized civilian casualties incurred during the ongoing conflict in Iraq. Works presents an exhibition of plans and responses selected out of the pool that now exist on the iraqimemorial.org site. The proposal guidelines encourage participants to use a wide range of locations and mediums to create collective memory and unity, drawing upon traditional and expanded ideas of memorial. iraqimemorial.org is an effort initiated by media artist Joseph DeLappe to call upon the collective creative community to consider the cost of war from all sides. The exhibition at Works presents a selection of 54 of the most striking submissions as selected by two juror’s reviews. Featured projects span a range of creative practices including:  architecture, social media, geomapping, performance, video and the visual arts.

Works Hosts World Premiere of Our American Myth: a theatrical experiment

The Bindlepunks in Our American Myth

Works proudly presents the Bindlepunks Theatre Co. production of Our American Myth.

What would you kill for? Why do we have such a strong heritage of political violence in America?

Someone got shot and we want to understand why.

When Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head, we had some questions. Mainly, “WHY?!” We started asking our friends, families, strangers at bars, and the Interwebs. They told us things, and we put those things into a play…

So now we weave a new American myth:

The tale of a brave and conflicted politician, and the patriotic and idealistic young man who is ultimately driven to shoot her. If that sounds like your cup of tea… If you feel up to the challenge of the conversation… If you’re looking for something a little different in the South Bay…

We need your help to bring Our American Myth to life.

Better Luck Next Time: February 4 through 26

Have you ever heard this phrase? It is defined as “an expression that comforts someone for a minor disappointment.”  Whether it’s a matter of the heart, life experiences, work or leisure, there is almost always a time when this applies. It might be that piece of art that is loved but just didn’t fit the bill. Engaging in a conversation, examining social or political issues, creating humor, capturing history or chronicling a new work—this exhibition will reveal the artistic expression for the meaning behind the phrase. These artists are making the choice to be lucky this year, presenting some great art that will empower time and again while discovering hilarity in Better Luck Next Time.

Presented in collaboration with South Bay Area Women’s Caucus for Art. This exhibition is comprised of members of South Bay Area Women’s Caucus for Art with invited artists from Silicon Valley Open Studios and Silicon Valley Artists’ Collaborative. Guest curators: Mariana Barnes, PhD, SBAWCA Exhibitions Chair, SVOS Steering Committee; Ally Richter, PhD, SBAWCA Vice President, SVOS Exhibitions Manager, Palo Alto Art Commissioner; and Susan Kraft, SBAWCA President.
