Friday the Thirteenth Marks
Body of Works: Community Mosaic
Works/San José Community Art and Performance Center
Re-Opens in SoFA District of Downtown San José

San Jose, March 30, 2007 --- Works/San José will re-open in its new location in the SoFA (South First Area) neighborhood on Friday, April 13 with an audience participation salon-style free public reception and celebration..

The doors will open to the public in its new home at 451 South First Street, and all are invited to participate and create Works first show on First Street.

In keeping with the mission to be “the” place for the South Bay community to experiment, exhibit, and engage, Works will open with “Body of Works: Community Mosaic” --- a community collaboration to represent the sum of its parts. The exhibition is open to all who wish to create and contribute a piece. The Mosaic is in keeping with Works’ devotion to embracing artists of the broadest definition, including the community and Friday night SoFA-goers, as well as their artist members.

“Our grand re-opening event, ‘Body of Works: Community Mosaic’ epitomizes Works’ core values of engagement, opportunity, and accessibility,” said Erin Cizan, Executive Director of Works/San José. “It will be a great way to welcome the community to our new home and honor everyone’s inner artist.”

Attendees are invited to create on site or bring one or more 16 inches X 16 inches squares depicting in any real, imagined, or metaphorical manner: head and shoulders, torso, hip to knee, or knee to feet. For more details check out the website, www.workssanjose.org. Each donated square will be partnered with others to create life size humanoid forms and the final assembled collaborative will be auctioned off on ebay.com, seller name workssj, to benefit the completion of Works’ new home.

Body of Work: Community Mosaic” will open Friday, April 13th with a free public reception and runs through May 10th.

Works will also participate in its first First Friday on May 4 along with other SOFA district arts groups. First Friday has become a tradition in which the galleries and museums stay open late on the first Friday of every month.

Works/San José will also be celebrating its 30th anniversary as a nonprofit that is dedicated to being a community that showcases a diverse array of visual and performing artists.

"The prospect of Works moving into the SoFA district is great news for the organization and for the local arts scene,” said Steve McCray, Chair of the Arts Commission for the City of San José. “There's a lot of excitement on South First, and Works will add to that with its long history of showcasing local artists and its commitment to community involvement.”
