FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Passing Through
Works Gallery, San Jose
January 6 - February 5, 2005

Artists: Judy O'Shea, Dan Pillers and Michael O'Shea
Opening Reception: Friday, January 7th, 2005, 7-9PM
Artists' Talk: Thursday, January 20th, 2005, 6-8PM

'Passing Through' is a site-specific collaborative installation that explores life's passages, its obstacles and what it takes to move beyond them. Through a collaborative effort combining artistic styles, Judy O'Shea, Dan Pillers and Michael O'Shea have created an interactive installation using the abstracted internal-workings of a mill as an alchemic metaphor to the way that facing one's fears often lead to a greater understanding of our common humanity and self-awareness.

The site-specific installation references the past history of Works; especially it's roots as a flourmill. Personal notes and drawings from a Sperry Flour engineer, which show diagrams of the movement of materials, were a source of inspiration. Using the movement of essential elements of life, from raw to finished product as a metaphor for our personal passages, the artists have animated the space, inviting each spectator to project their own voyage.

The main focal point of installation consists of large sculptural mechanisms, created from over 800 square feet of hand-cast 'kozo' paper, suspended from the rafters to the floor of the gallery. Each sculpture is representative of the artists' various thoughts, ideals, fears and experiences. As visitors pass through the gallery the kinetic elements will create a dialog and question boundaries.

The artists, Judy O'Shea, Dan Pillers and Michael O'Shea have combined their talents and resources on this collaborative project. The project has been talk, on January 20th, 2005.
