Ellen Lake and Michael Trigilio
"Video Time: Works In Series"
Works/San José
presents an evening of video art from two Bay Area artists. Ellen Lake's
delightful video series examines the thin line between eccentricity and
normalcy, documentary and fantasy, hobbyism and obsession. In a series
of short videos, Lake uncovers the diverse ways people gather, classify,
and categorize their collections. Working in a variety media, Michael
Trigilio investigates our cultural infatuation with popular media, anxiety,
and narcissism. Trigilio’s video serial, the Untitled Book Series
is a non-linear suite of short videos anchored in relationships to specific
books and, when taken together, is essentially a self-portrait.
Oakland resident
Ellen Lake has shown work from her collection project throughout the Bay
Area, including New Langton Arts, Pacific Film Archives and the San Francisco
Arts Commission Gallery. Works from the series have traveled to the Rotterdam
VHS Festival in the Netherlands and the Pioneer Theater in New York. Lake
received her MFA from Mills College in 2002. Born and raised in San Antonio,
TX, Michael Trigilio received his B.A. in Humanities from the University
of Texas at San Antonio and received his M.F.A. from Mills College in
2003. His fear of religion notwithstanding, he was ordained as a lay Buddhist
priest in 1997, a role from which he resigned five years later. His work
has been presented at the Anthology Film Archives in New York, Southern
Exposure Gallery in San Francisco, and the Blue Star Art Space in San
Antonio, among other venues. He currently teaches video and multimedia
studies at Stanford University and Diablo Valley College, respectively.

Patrice Scanlon, Melissa Anast-Taylor, and Aki Shinomiya.
Works/San Jose
Saturday, April 30
8:00 p.m.
$10/$6 members / No one turned away
Bringing together music, dance, and video, these three collaborative artists
have designed a compelling program of multimedia performances. Composer
Patrice Scanlon has designed musical software which enables a video camera
to track the motion of a dancer onstage. As the dancer crosses the stage,
her movements trigger hundreds of Scanlon's musical phrases in real-time.
Scanlon and choreographer/dancer Melissa Anast-Taylor work collaboratively
to create both dance and a "live" musical score. Experimental
video artist Aki Shinomiya has developed a real-time video manipulation
process which, when paired with Scanlon's own improvised electronic music,
creates a dazzling effect. Sometimes hypnotic and often inspired, these
performances transcend the trappings of mere "high-tech art"
and evolve into poetic expressions of motion, light, and sound.

Reception: Friday, August 26th, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
In this innovative exhibition, curator Michael Rosenthal explores the
21st century phenomenon of the online auction. After purchasing 36 pieces

process and explores the ways we place value on artistic objects.

Small Hands, Big Plans
11/4-11/5/05
Reception: November 4th, from 5:30 to 8 pm
Don't miss this exciting exhibit, the culmination of our summer Youth & Family Art Connection
program (YFAC). With their small hands, children dove into acrylics, watercolors, markers,
and collage and passionately expressed their ideas while exploring the different media.
These young artists had the liberty to create without restriction, and the result is an array
of artwork that illuminates their individuality. Join us in celebrating the end products of
small hands and big plans.
